Although native to Argentina, the Piazzolla family lived in New York when Astor was between the ages of 3 and 16, and he absorbed the big band sound of Swing epitomized by composer/arranger/band leaders such as Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. Returning to Argentina in 1937, Piazzolla, still a teenager, established himself as a bandoneon player in a tango orchestra and as an arranger, while continuing to study classical music. (Bandoneon - a member of the concertina family of instruments with a different sound to the accordian).

In 1954 Piazzolla won a scholarship to study composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Rather than grounding his style in the European classical tradition, she encouraged him to develop his own voice from his passion for tango which led to his compositions of the late 1950's forming the groundwork of what was to become 'tango nuevo' - new tango. This was championed by Piazzolla's group 'Quinteto Tango Nuevo' which he formed in 1960 to perform on the concert stage rather than in dance halls, the traditional home of tango. From then on he used increasingly counterpoint, metrical shifts, dissonance and other techniques associated with classical and jazz composition in his music, which appealed to North American and European audiences but repelled the tango purists of his homeland.

Piazzolla based himself in Europe for the 10 years leading up to 1985, performing worldwide and composing, before returning to Buenos Aires and retirement. He left over 750 works in a wide variety of genres including concertos and film and stage scores, but his principal legacy was to transform the tango from a national dance to a popular worldwide phenomenon.
