Jules Demersseman joined Tulou's flute class at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 11 and won the first prize the following year. He went on to a career as a flute virtuoso and teacher but was denied a professorship because of his dislike of the 'Boehm System' of flute fingering which was becoming increasingly popular at the time. Although a comprehensive list of his compositions seems not to be available, stock lists suggest that Demersseman wrote at least sixty works. Music for flute accounts for nearly half of those but most brass instruments and other woodwind are catered for, including the saxophone.

Demersseman was a close friend of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone and saxhorn instrument families, and he was one of the first to compose for the instrument. His undated 'Allegretto Brillante' is as brilliant as its name suggests, for the most part, but there are short intervals where the notation, rhythm and dynamics indicate a more lyrical interpretation. The piece ends decisively in the 'brilliant' style of the opening.
