ALTANGO

Although he qualified as an engineering draughtsman, John Robert Brown pursued a career as a performing musician on clarinet and saxophone, for ten years before taking a degree in education at Nottingham University. From 1975 he was a full time senior lecturer at Leeds College of Music where he taught on the first jazz course of its kind in Europe and started an annual international Jazz Education Conference. Besides contributing regularly to a variety of music magazines, he has published a saxophone method, saxophone quartet, brass quintet, and twenty folios of jazz transcriptions. In his 'Guide to Performance' of the piece, published in Clarinet & Saxophone magazine, the composer says "The tango is a powerful dance of a type that has been all but forgotten today, edged out from our dreary dance world of discos and DJs. ......, the music to accompany a tango should be played with intensity and colour."
