BLUES CONCERTO

Not long after the end of WWII, Bill Holcombe combined his talents as a composer/arranger and as a saxophonist when he joined the reed section of the Tommy Dorsey Band as well as becoming the Band's staff arranger. In the late 1950's and 1960's his days were spent writing film scores and making arrangements for recording orchestras while he played in the pit for several Broadway Musicals by night. Latterly, his Jazz Suites and arrangements for single reed, flute ensembles and wind quintets have proved popular.

The version of his Blues Concerto for alto saxophone and brass quintet was first performed in 1992 and the alto sax.& piano arrangement remains popular. The first and third movements are full of bravura writing for the soloist against accompanying riffs. the second (Pastoral) is marked "Pensively" but that mood is broken by 16 bars "Subito allegro...." in the middle of the movement.
