Gabriel Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he learned composition from Massenet and organ from Cesar Franck, and won prizes for piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue, culminating in the coveted Prix de Rome in 1882 with his cantata 'Edith'. Via an eight year term as organist of Sainte-Clotilde, Pierné took over conducting the orchestra founded by the leader of the Paris Opera Orchestra, Édouard Colonne in 1910 and held the post for twenty-two years, until four years before his death.

Pierné's catalogue runs to well over one hundred works of which piano pieces and songs make up about half, although he did write twenty-five stage works including eight operas and ten ballets. The Op.19 Canzonetta for clarinet and piano is one of only three works he wrote for accompanied solo woodwind. It is a single movement piece in a lilting 6/8 punctuated by quick upward runs with a slower and thoughtful short middle section - No doubt well received in fashionable Parisian salons of the late nineteenth century.
