CAVATINE Op.37

As one of Fernando Sor's more accomplished students, Napoleon Coste is generally recognized as France's leading guitarist of the nineteenth century and a composer who wrote interestingly and consistently well for the instrument. He was also attracted to the oboe, possibly through his friendship with Charles Triebert, who played principal oboe for the Theatre Italien opera orchestra in Paris, and Coste wrote a number of oboe and guitar duets. The guitar's popularity was fading by the mid nineteenth century so he produced alternative piano parts as well.
Shortly before 1992, the Op.37 Cavatine was discovered as an oboe and piano duet in the National Library in Paris. The guitar part was restored by Dominique Daigremont, relying on the extant guitar parts of other duos by Coste.
