CELINE MANDARINE

On completion of his saxophone, instrumentation and conducting studies at the Koninklijk Conservatoire in Brussels, Alain Crepin served with various military bands in Belgium, first as saxophonist and later as conductor. He played as a member of the well-known Dinant Saxophone Quartet and moved into music education with saxophone professorships in France and Spain, and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels from 1981.

Alain Crepin's compositions include over fifty pieces for concert band and fanfare orchestra, a Mass and nearly thirty wind and brass solos with piano accompaniment, mostly for saxophone. Dedicated to his daughter and written for her first public audition, 'Celine Mandarine' is one of these. The lyrical and thoughtful introduction and first tune are followed by twenty-four bars of energetic 2/4 which give way to a new melody in a slower tempo. The faster tune returns for twenty bars (including a time signature change) and the piece ends with a clear reference to the opening theme and a short coda.
