This concerto was first published in Amsterdam by Jeanne Roger, probably in 1717, and as part of a collection of six by a variety of composers which included Vivaldi and Albinoni besides Alessandro Marcello. It may be because of this and the mis-titling of later editions that it was thought to have been composed by Vivaldi and, when that was corrected, attributed to the better known of the Marcello brothers, Benedetto before Alessandro was again identified as the composer in the late twentieth century.
While JS Bach was at Weimar (1708-17) and before Jeanne Roger's first edition was published, Bach obtained a manuscript of the concerto with the solo part set down in basic, unornamented notation, which was not uncommon during the Baroque period. He arranged the concerto for solo harpsichord, adding his own ornamentation and it is included in the Bach Catalogue with the number BWV 974. Much of the ornamentation Bach intended for the keyboard is playable on the modern oboe, particularly
