Despite family opposition to his choice of career and receiving no formal musical training, Telemann was successful enough in his own lifetime to be able to turn down the post of Kantor for the city of Leipzig in favour of his friend JS Bach and, apart from an eight month visit to Paris in 1737, he remained in Hamburg for most of his working life . Handel also knew him well and is reported as having said that Telemann could write a motet in eight parts as easily as anyone else could write a letter. He was possibly the most prolific composer of all time and his immense output includes fifty-four concertos for solo instrument (excluding keyboard) and orchestra. Ten of these are for oboe as distinct from the three for oboe d'amore.
The E minor concerto is thought to post-date Telemann's Paris trip where he absorbed the French style of composition in contrast to the Italian, about which he had misgivings. So he followed the four movement format and style adopted by Albinoni and his cont
