CONCERTO in G minor

Fasch studied under Kuhnau at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig and between 1714 and 1722, took up a succession of posts as composer to minor courts in Germany and Bohemia. He was invited to compete against JS Bach for the position of Cantor at St. Thomas Leipzig, but declined to do so. Bach thought well of Fasch's music and copied out five of his orchestral suites and Bach's elder son Carl Philip Emmanuel left a significant collection of church music by Fasch as well as overtures, trios and sonatas by him which are now kept in Brussels, Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden.
It is in the Saxon State Library in Dresden that the manuscript of Fasch's G minor Concerto for oboe, strings and continuo is preserved. Typically of the high Baroque, tempi, phrasing and ornamentation are not indicated but left to the performer's judgement and taste, in keeping with the conventions of the period.
