About the Work:
Dance of the Chupacabras was composed in 2005. It is the first in a series of compositions based on the characteristics of mythical creatures. Chupacabras (Spanish for ''goat suckers'') are a mischievous blend of a reptile and a mer-creature that hops like a kangaroo and looks like E.T.''s ill-favoured cousin. First sighted in Latin American countries in the 1980s, they quickly became a world-wide phenomenon due to the confluence of the first sightings and the explosive growth of the Internet. This piece is episodic, starting with a gathering around a campfire, and detailing first a sighting, then the subsequent shenanigans of our (anti-) hero. A level of aggression and a certain irreverence is completely appropriate for the performance of this piece. Dance of the Chupacabras was premiered at the 2008 Kendall Betts Horn Camp, coached by Hermann Baumann (whose performance notes are dutifully transcribed). For his support and encouragement, I humbly dedicate this piece
