13 pieces, each by a different female composer, from four centuries, for flute and piano. Starting with the earliest, Anna Amalia of Prussia (born 1723) and the youngest sister of Frederick the Great, there is a brief biography of each composer represented including the most recent six, all born in the twentieth century and most of whom are active in the twenty-first. Lili Boulanger was born into a long-established family of musicians in 1893 and was sister to Nadia who later gained a formidable reputation as a teacher of composition. Lili was dogged by poor health but still managed to be the first woman to win the Prix de Rome (for composition) in 1913. Her surviving works were written between 1911 and 1918 when she died and might well have disappeared but for the promotion they received from Nadia until her death in 1979.
