Mozart wrote seventeen short single movement works to be played during Mass, in the interlude between the Epistle and Gospel readings. The earlier sonatas were written for two violins and organ continuo but the later ones are scored for full orchestra.

By the time Mozart came to write the last and most substantial of these four sonatas (No.17, K.336), he was chief organist at Salzburg and probably wrote the important organ obbligato for himself. In this arrangement, Yona Ettlinger has balanced the organ part with a cadenza for the clarinet at the end of the piece. He played solo clarinet with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra during the 1950's and toured widely as a concert soloist, giving masterclasses and broadcasting. From 1972 he was Director and Professor of clarinet and chamber music at the Guildhall School of Music in London and during that time he produced a number of published arrangements for clarinet of baroque and classical works, including these four church sonatas by Mozart.

  • II Sonata No.1, K67 (1767)
  • III Sonata No.10, K244 (1766)
  • IV Sonata No.17, K336 (1780)
