Milhaud was one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth century with over four hundred opus numbers to his credit, spread over most genres. He was a member of the group of French composers known as "Les Six" who reacted in technique and style against the romanticism and sophistication of their composer predecessors, Debussy, Ravel and Wagner. As well as polytonality (writing in more than two key centres simultaneously), the members of Les Six used exotic rhythms and forms from far beyond Europe in their music. Milhaud was particularly well-travelled and had spent a lot of time in North and South America. His wife Madeleine said of him "I think that after Provence [where he was born], Brazil is the country that truly cast a spell on him."
Milhaud's arrangement for alto saxophone & orchestra of his three movement "Scaramouche" appeared in 1939 and for clarinet and orchestra, with piano reduction, in 1941, when it was made popular by Benny Goodman. The first movement, entitled "
