Sequence, for two solo horns and horn quartet, was commissioned to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the sudden, tragic death of Dennis Brain in 1957. Brain had been a pupil at St Paul's School in South London and the three composers of this work were the three full-time music teachers at the school at that time (2007). The three of us, hugely privileged to have been given this commission, were then given the great favour of overseeing a recording in which three of the country's foremost players, Richard Watkins (himself a former St Paul's pupil), Michael Thompson and Martin Owen were joined by three young professionals.
Each of us wrote a movement, Robin producing the introductory first movement, unfolding contrapuntally, Peter the work's intense, sombre centrepiece and Ben the agile, six-eight finale with its 'hunting' connotations. The movements are linked by, first, a sustained D and, second, a sustained B flat - D.B., therefore. Those, also, are the work's closing pitches.
The demands on the players are high, in terms both of individual challenges and of ensemble, but we took care to write practically. We believe it stands as an effective memorial and a communicative unity; certainly our hearts were in its genesis.
