Tchaikovsky wrote the twenty-four short piano pieces of his Op.39 Children's Album, subtitled "24 Pieces a la Schumann" in the summer of 1878 and they were published later that year with a dedication to his nephew Vladimir Davydov. The composer used Italian folk melodies in 'Neapolitan Song' (No.18) and 'Italian Song' (No.15) but a performance of the whole collection lasts only half an hour.

Thomas Johnson studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where he supplemented his income by playing the piano accompaniment to silent films in local cinemas. He began teaching in 1931 and became known for his educational compositions and arrangements for various instruments including the clarinet and oboe. He chose six of Tchaikovsky's Op.39 pieces and skilfully arranged them to bring out the melody in the oboe part whilst the piano accompaniment is within the grasp of most players.

  • Waltz, Op.39 No.8
  • Neapolitan Song, Op.39 No.18
  • Sweet Dreams, Op.39 No.21
  • Italian Song, Op.39 No.15
  • Mazurka, Op.39 No.10
