It seems that Vivaldi's many bassoon concerti were written specifically for the instrument but, according to the Ricordi catalogue of his works, very few of the sonatas were intended for wind instruments and none for bassoon solo. This sonata is listed as 'Fanna XIV No.5 - Sonata for cello and bass continuo' and was written as one of a set of six some time between 1720 and 1730. It was first published in 1740 by Leclerc and Boivin of Paris, probably without the composer's consent, but manuscript copies exist in Naples and at Wiesentheid which are claimed to have been prepared under Vivaldi's supervision. He used the cello's sonorous low register to bring out a depth of expression which is less often heard in his music for other solo instruments but transfers well to the bassoon.

The source(s) used for this edition are not mentioned, but the copyright date of 1955 suggests that the 1740 Leclerc print would have been the principal source. Whatever text was used, it was revised and the figured bass realized by the 12 tone composer Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975) who taught composition at colleges in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's. The sonata was transcribed for this edition by Arthur Weisberg (1931-2009), a leading bassoonist in American orchestras, conductor and teacher.
