Giuseppe Sammartini and his younger brother by three years, Giovanni began their musical training in their native Milan where they both had some success. Giuseppe established himself as the principal oboist of the Milan Opera while his instrumental and vocal compositions won favour in France and England. In about 1725 Giuseppe moved to London where he taught, continued to compose and took up the post of oboist at the King's Theatre. For his playing there and elsewhere as soloist he was described as "the greatest oboist that the world has ever known". In 1736 he became 'Music Master' to Frederick, Prince of Wales and his family and remained in their service until his death fourteen years later.

While he was alive, Giuseppe Sammartini was so well thought of as a composer that his brother published several of his works under his name. His sonatas are still described as having "charm and brilliance" and, by tending to omit the continuo from the Op.3 set, he was technically ahead of his time by producing a genuine string trio. This G Major Sonata (Op.13, No.4) was one of a set of six for "German flute, violin or hautboy with thorough bass" first published in London by J. Johnson about ten years after the composer's death.
