"Der getreue Musikmeister" (The Faithful Music Master) was very probably the first music periodical to be published. The first issue appeared in Hamburg on 13 November 1728 and was followed by twenty-four fortnightly instalments or "lessons" as Telemann called them, the last one being published in early November of the following year. Each issue contained four pages and 'featured' a sonata or suite as the main work, the remaining space being taken up with perhaps an aria, small character pieces, canons and even exercises in counterpoint to be completed by the purchaser. Telemann was clearly aiming at the amateur market and catered for singers as well as players of virtually every instrument in use at the time in the seventy pieces which make up the series. He wrote most of the content but invited contributions from composers local to Hamburg including Zelenka and Telemann's friend JS Bach who provided a "riddle canon" (BWV 1074).

The present edition is taken from a copy of the complete set which is preserved in the Stadtbibliothek, Leipzig and seems to be a compilation of pieces chosen from the set rather than a reproduction of one single issue.

  • Sonata in G minor, TWV 41:g5 - I. Grave, II. Alla breve, III. Adagio, IV. Vivace
  • L'Hiver (Winter), TWV 41:d1
  • Air Trompette, TWV 41:C1
  • Niaise, TWV 41:E2
  • Napolitana, TWV 41:B4
