Although she has performed on the accordion since she was seven, Karen Street composes more for one of her alternative instruments, the saxophone. She studied clarinet as her first instrument at Bath University but played her final recital on the accordion and, later, drew some attention as a saxophonist and founder member of the all female sax. quartet 'Fairer Sax' in the late 1980's. Karen Street is now one of the five composer/player members of 'Saxtet' which she runs with her husband, Andy Tweed. She was noticed as a composer and arranger with the three 'Fairer Sax Ensemble Books' which were published during the 1990's. They were produced, with some solo pieces, to meet the need for music for saxophone students which had become clear to her through teaching. Saxtet publications alone now publish nearly thirty of her compositions, most of them for solo or accompanied saxophone, or in ensembles and her work, via various publishers, appears in most of the saxophone exam syllabi in the UK.

These ten approachable and contrasting studies cover a wide range of styles from Baroque pastiche through folk and jazz to funk. They explore an imaginative variety of tempi, articulations and registers and present plenty of rhythmic and fingering challenges.

Like all Karen Street’s music, they are thoroughly satisfying to play and allow plenty of scope for self-expression beyond the technical demands.

  • Á la Gavotte (Baroque elegance on the sax).
  • Leaps & Bounds (Bouncy swing and big intervals).
  • Folk Dance (A vigorous dance with double density (false) fingerings and irregular time signatures).
  • A Little Piece (A wistful exercise in breath control and phrasing).
  • Spic & Spanish (A colourful contrast between vigorous staccato and senuous legato).
  • Like it or Not? (Improvisatory and wild, with big leaps, off-beat rhythms and flutter tongueing).
  • Reel Time (An exuberant test of breath control and stamina).
  • Watch It! (Bright swing with dramatic dynamics).
  • Romance (Romantic lyricism with slurred intervals that test the embouchure).
  • Party Time (Buoyant and snappy, with testing off-beat semiquavers).
