WALTZ in B minor

This little waltz was the first piano piece from Albania to be published in the West. Tonin Harapi (1928 - 1992) was born in Shkodra, Albania. One of the first generation of classically trained Albanian composers, he studied composition in the 1950s at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow. Because of an ideological quarrel between the Albanian and Russian governments over the orthodoxy of Marxism-Leninism, he had to return to Albania in 1964 and finished his studies at the newly opened Conservatoire in Tirana. After graduating he was appointed professor of composition, a position which he held until his retirement. He died in July 1992, just as his country gained its freedom, and is remembered with much affection by his many students.
