Besides holding an oboe professorship at the Royal College of Music in London, James Brown played second oboe with the English Chamber Orchestra for nearly forty years. This position gave him the opportunity to search for out of print and sometimes unpublished music of the past, mainly for oboe, in libraries, shops and private collections wherever the Orchestra was touring. He arranged or edited several of his finds and published them in three volumes, the five pieces which make up this collection being the first. Only one of the five seems to have been written originally for oboe and that is based on another composers piano solo. Two of them are printed for the first time in this edition.
Legende Pastorale by Benjamin Godard (1849-95); Godard wrote several operas, concerti and salon music of which little has survived. Probably best known for the Berceuse from his opera 'Jocelyn'.
Andantino by Joseph Joachim (1831-1907); Joachim was a violin virtuoso for nearly sixty years. This is the first edition of a piece written in the musical visitors book of the oboist Gustav Vogt in the 1840's.
Abendlied by Robert Schumann (1810-56); this was originally written as a piano duet but arranged for oboe & piano by Joachim (above).
Andantino Espressivo by George Onslow (1784-1853); Onslow was an amateur 'cellist and composer who also contributed this Andantino to Vogt's visitors book. Like the Joachim, this is its first appearance in print.
Nocturne by Theophile Lalliet (1837-92); Lalliet studied oboe with the ubiquitous Vogt and worked as an orchestral player and composer. This Nocturne is based on a piano solo by Dohler, a popular salon composer.

  • Godard - Legende Pastorale
  • Joachim - Andantino
  • Schumann - Abendlied
  • Onslow - Andantino Espressivo
  • Nocturne - Lalliet
