Jazz Sebastian Bach is a suite of five pieces for flute and a jazz trio, based mostly on movements from Bach's flute sonatas. Each movement features a specific point of view from which Bach's music is being approached: from Jacques Loussier and Claude Bolling, via Dave Brubeck and Michel Legrand, to Chick Corea and the author's own attitude. Hence the subtitle of the suite: 'Chance Encounters.'

Prelude: The opening section sets the stage with an explosive burst of energy inspired by a motif form the Allegro of the e-minor Flute Sonata (BWV 1034), counterbalanced by a contrasting slow fragment from the Piano Sonata in D Major.

First Encounter: Presto... with the Duke is based on the Presto from the B-minor Flute Sonata (BWV 1030). After a fusion-like, rushing, short introduction rendering a motif from the E-Minor Sonata's Allegro (BWV 1034) and a contrasting slow fragment from a B-Minor French Clavier Suite an encounter of a fugue theme with a combo-jazz atmosphere occurs. At certain points it gives place to Duke Ellington-like piano riffs, followed eventually by a traditional bass solo, also based on the fugue's theme.

Second Encounter: Siciliano... with Dave Brubeck presents the beautiful theme of the famous Siciliano from the Eb-Major Sonata (BWV 1031), re-harmonized and accompanied as a nostalgic jazz-waltz in the spirit of the sixties. Ornamented with a characteristic improvisational elaboration, the theme eventually contracts to 5/8 time, a conscious reference to the perennial favorite Take Five, made famous by Brubeck's quartet.

Fourth Encounter: Adagio... with Michel Legrand has its basis in the Adagio, used by Bach both in his Clavier Concerto in F-Minor and in the Violin Concerto in G-Minor. This magnificent chant's tranquility and introverted lyricism is highlighted by the new harmonic 'dressing' in the spirit of ballads from musicals and music films from Hollywood or Broadway.

The Final Encounter... with Chick Corea closes the circle by returning the Suite's introduction into the center of the musical canvas. All the sounds of the Bachian melody are tied together in a distinctive fusion-like scale, full of hidden syncopation and unexpected turns.

  • First Encounter: Presto... with the Duke
  • Second Encounter: Siciliano... with Dave Brubeck
  • Third Encoutner: Presto... with Agatha Christie
  • Fourth Encounter: Adagio... with Michel Legrand
  • Final Encounter... with Chick Corea
