Having spent ten years teaching the piano at the Paris Schola Cantorum, Grovlez began his conducting career at the Opera-Comique in 1905 and progressed via appointments to orchestras in Lisbon and Chicago before taking the rostrum of the Paris Opera in 1914. There he stayed until 1933 when he returned to teaching as Professor of Chamber Music at the Paris Conservatoire in 1939. Two years before he had started to write as a critic for 'L'Art Musical' and, on top of all this, he found the time to compose. It has been suggested that Grovlez involved himself in music too widely to make his mark as a composer but his operas and ballets were well received and he also produced symphonic works, piano pieces, some fifty songs and several pieces for wind and piano which had some success. It may be that Grovlez's style is too close to that of Debussy and particularly Fauré for him to stand out as a composer in his own right.

'L'Almanach aux Images' ('Illustrated Calendar' perhaps?) is a suite of eight pieces inspired by the poetry of Tristan Klingsor, a contemporary of Grovlez's and one of 'Les Apaches', which he wrote for piano solo in 1911. There are parts which are reminiscent of Debussy's 'Children's Corner' but Grovlez's suite has a charm of its own which Mark Tanner is bringing to a wider audience by producing this transcription for flute and piano.
