From the jazz he heard as a child in New York, the tango of his native Argentina which he played on the bandoneon, and study with the legendary composition teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Astor Piazzolla evolved his own eclectic style of composition which put him at the forefront of 'Tango Nueva'. Although he lived in Italy for a number of years, Piazzolla based himself in Buenos Aires from where he toured the world, leading ensembles of various sizes and instrumental players. He wrote the scores for nearly fifty films including, in 1982, the music for 'Enrico IV' which includes the piece called 'Oblivion'.

In composing this piece, Piazzolla returned to the more traditional tango style ".... with a melody of extreme melancholy - long-held notes alternating with slowly falling and weaving figures". Lyrics have been set to the tune, possibly by the Italian singer/songwriter Angela Denia Tarenzi, but it is not clear who gave the piece its name. The word 'oblivion' suggests something even deeper and darker than "extreme melancholy".
