Rossini's 'Variations in C major for clarinet and orchestra', as they are described in Grove's Dictionary of Music & Musicians, were written when he was an eighteen year old student at the Liceo Communale in Bologna, and dated 1809. But the writing is restricted to the exact range of the oboe of the day and ignores more than an octave of the clarinet's range. It looks more like oboe music and is so untypical of clarinet composition that clarinettists tend to ignore it. All this must have persuaded the veteran oboist James Brown to prepare the precursor of this edition for oboe and piano.

By 1817 Rossini was well established as a composer of opera, so when 'La Cenerentola' (Cinderella) was first performed that year, it was an immediate success. Chopin seems to have been taken with it, or at least, one of its arias because in 1824 he wrote what seems to be his only composition for solo wind instrument and piano in the form of the 'Variations in E Major on a Theme from Rossini's "Cenerentola". The theme of the title is the aria which includes the words "Non piu mesta accanto al fuoco staro ..." (No longer will I sit alone and unhappy) and is sung by Cinderella as the finale. James Brown transposed Chopin's original down a tone to D Major to bring it more comfortably within the oboe's range.

These two sets of variations were originally published with the reference NM394. This has been replaced with the current edition, reference EMA142.
