Chris Crosby about  STRING QUARTET No.2:
Sep 16, 2020
(Verified customer)
This arrangement, by a bassoonist, is well balanced , though lacks some of the natural tempo markings that are essential for an effective performance. The famous 3rd movement melody is, not surprisingly, opened by the bassoon, though flute and oboe enjoy it as well later on. Our clarinettist was slightly disappointed not to have had a chance to play it! If taken up to the correct tempo, this arrangement is challenging for all the players, though works very well and should be an audience pleaser, when we can eventually play before an audience again.

Mr John Woodall about  HORN CONCERTO Op.58:
May 22, 2020
(Verified customer)
This arrival of this excellent edition provided just the incentive to get to know a work, of which I had known no more than that it is "out there". The technical details of the writing - not least the changes of transposition - are of particular interest.

Thank you for your assistance, finally, I was able to get the music sheet of the beautiful Gipp’s concerto. And the staff was very kind.
This concerto is very difficult, keys move between F and E. But passages are very poetic. Especially, the treatment of high notes are very effective. It’s worth playing!

Lovely duos for fairly advanced players and students. Reasonable price for 28 pages of music. Each of the 3 duos has 3 movements of varied lengths and technical difficulty. There are some impossible to manage page turns in a performance but that is the only snag. Really useful book to have.

This book is expensive but worth the money because it’s so detailed and informative, even revelatory! Especially useful was being able to steal a look into other great players reed specifications and the ‘X-ray’ photos of their reed scrapes almost worth more than anything else. It is helping me to reset my reed making. Thank you!

Very easy to read and broken down into chunks to help with learning. Playing in an orchestra, it has aided in the learning of a part that jumps from horn in C to E to D and back again. Excellent resource for horn players IMO

Lenny Sayers about  CLARINET MUSIC BY FEMALE COMPOSERS:
Nov 4, 2020
(Verified customer)
I bought this book because I am a clarinet teacher in a conservatoire and I am looking to expand my collection of music by female composers. This compilation has a number of wonderful and beautifully written pieces, most of which were unknown to me. The Tailleferre is a particular gem that should be performed more often. Each piece is relatively short so could serve as encores or short fillers to pad out a programme. There is also a lot of useful information about the composers in the introduction. I can't help thinking, what great works have we been missing because in the past women were discouraged from pursuing a career in composition? If we truly had a level playing field the music world would be so much richer!

A great set of pieces to help get your fingers around the tricky bits of many well-known bassoon passages. Am enjoying getting them up to speed and the variety in the collection.

Highly recommend to very advanced players looking to take their altissimo to the next level. Loads of written out long note exercises, mechanism, voicing, short studies in every key, scales written out with high altissimo, subdivision exercises, vibrato and a cool down! Going through this feels like doing a workout then going to a spa, and your sound and control will be all the better for it!

Lenny Sayers about  EXCURSIONS:
Apr 12, 2021

These 14 variations on a well known theme by Paganini are both fun and challenging to play. They are witty and musical and are well written for the instrument utilising a large 3.5 octave range - ideal for any player wishing to practise their fluency across the registers. The piece is very approachable to play and to listen to and suitable for a professional, advanced player or student looking for something new to perform or practise on the bass clarinet.

I am so pleased with the ideas presented in this book. As an oldish amateur I have found the advice on blowing particularly useful in producing a richer and more focused sound. Well worth the money for me.

This book is essential for anyone who wants to play the E-flat clarinet in an orchestra. Not only are all the important difficult passages in the standard repertoire included, helpful suggestions with phrasing and fingering are also included. Particularly valuable is the complete part for Till Eulenspiegel specially transposed for the E-flat from the rare clarinet in D part.

This is yet another edition of the most famous brass players' book. The difference this time is that it is specifically written with the CC tuba in mind. This means that the studies are transposed into keys where the fingering on CC tuba is the same as that on the cornet in the original.
I was very pleased to see that the "12 Celebrated Fantaisies and Airs Variés" are also included. No excuse now for not tackling "The Carnival of Venice". The book is nicely presented, and good value.

Eminently playable straight out of the box arrangements that provide interest for both players. Keys don't venture far from concert Bflat or C and the moving parts are restricted to quavers (eighth notes). In terms of standard, ABRSM Grade 4-5 will eat these for breakfast, yet there is enough interest in the moving parts to keep experienced musicians interested. Recommended.

The score has one stave in the tenor clef which makes sight reading of the score tricky for a pianist!

Nathaniel Dickey about  SONATA Op.80:
Nov 26, 2021
(Verified customer)
The work is in a good typeface and I was able to download it easily. The only thing I would wish for is an actual part in alto clef (for alto trombone). The download I got has a part for horn in F and a piano score with the alto clef part on a third staff. It is cumbersome to read from for performance.

JEWM Reply:
Many apologies for this - the trombone part should have been available to download as well. I will email this to you now.

May 3, 2022
(Verified customer)
Besides being a wonderful horn player, Christoph has gifted us a thorough yet succinct and flexible collection of warm-ups and daily exercises that touch virtually every aspect of horn playing. So far, as a working freelancer, I have already felt improvements in some of the fundamentals that have always troubled me and had not found sufficient exercises to develop, and I'm excited to have found exercises that help me feel I have the tools to prepare for anything I may want to play. Bravo and thank you, Christoph!

I’ve been looking for new things to play during lockdown and bought this piece a couple of weeks ago because it was recommended by a friend as being ‘your sort of music’
WOW!!! It absolutely IS - it took me one sight-read through to fall in love with it. A process that intensifies every time I work on it.

Peter Rivers about  26 SELECTED STUDIES:
Nov 29, 2021

Having recently taken the Trinity ATCL Diploma, my teacher recommended the 26 Studies from Altes method. She said the are ‘do-able’. I have tackled the first 3 and agree with her. However, I have to take them much slower than the suggested tempos. Apparently this is OK! Speed should come later in due course. Fingers crossed!

David Ellis about  DON'T FEAR THE HORN:
May 22, 2023
(Verified customer)
Don’t Fear the Horn is a truly excellent book. It is well written in a clear and accessible way and explains the instrument itself and all aspects of horn playing very well indeed. To some extent, Don’t Fear the Horn is written with teachers in mind, but “ordinary players” will get a lot out of it as well. I am just an amateur player struggling to get to grips with this wonderful, if frustrating, instrument and will certainly be referring to the book over and over again.

Thoroughly recommended.
