Bryan Kelly studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He returned to the RCM to teach harmony, counterpoint and orchestration for twenty years before moving to Italy to teach part time and then, in the 1990's to the Dordogne region of France. He has some sixty works to his name in a wide range of genres including choir, brass band, concertos and keyboard accompanied solos for various wind instruments.

The four movement Caribbean Suite was published in 1995. The first of these entitled 'Whistling Song', marked 'Giocoso', is built around a five quaver figure (the time signature is 5/8), but there are frequent changes of time and pulse which give this movement a restless feel. The second movement 'Spiritual' is in a more measured 2/4 and the A minor key helps to cast a more sober mood. A slow tango with the title 'Nocturne' is the third movement, based on a pattern of rising and falling crotchet triplets; and the suite ends with a strongly rhythmic 4/4 'Calypso' in a confident C Major.
