CLASSICAL SAXOPHONE SOLOS

Heinz Both was born in Hanover where he studied clarinet, piano and violin at the Municipal Conservatory. In 1942, at the age of 18, he was first clarinet in the Reich Labour Service band and after the end of the Second World War he led a band accompanying singers like Hans Bardeleben. He divided his time in the 1950's, 60's and 70's between founding and leading bands and teaching in Trossingen and Hanover where he began a harmonica school in 1955 and founded the Hanover Youth Band in 1963. Amongst Both's published compositions are "Blues in Bb", "Daisy" and "Manhattan Rag" and most of his output is on the lighter side. The twenty arrangements of pieces from the early Baroque to the twentieth century, which make up "Classical Saxophone Solos", must have been something of a departure for him and suggest a wide versatility in his approach.
