After studying at the Royal Manchester College of Music, Gordon Lewin spent five years in the Royal Air Force. By 1946 he was in London and a member of the BBC TV Orchestra, also playing for other ensembles. He performed on over one hundred film soundtracks, including the 'Carry On' series, 'Dr Who' and 'Hancock's Half Hour', amongst others, for television. Besides a second career in teaching clarinet, saxophone and arranging at Middlesex Polytechnic, Gordon Lewin had over seventy published compositions, arrangements, and edited works to his name including 'Twenty-two Unaccompanied Pieces for Saxophone'.
