"Every saxophone player is well aware of the educational importance of Franz Wilhelm Ferling’s 48 Etudes. Composed for oboe in 1831, they have become a staple in saxophone studies worldwide. In 1942, Marcel Mule adapted the Etudes for saxophone and turned them into a pedagogical must.
With my students at the Conservatory, my approach has always been technical as well as musical. Thus arose the need for a piano accompaniment that would highlight the harmonic structure and musical form of the pieces but also make them suitable for the concert stage. I have tried to espouse the bel canto spirit of composers such as Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. The absence of tempo markings is purely intentional: it is hoped the character of the piano part will help determine the ‘right’ tempo for each etude.
I am incredibly grateful to Claude Delangle (to whom this edition is dedicated) for having encouraged me to complete this exciting but exhausting work.
Here, I cannot help thinking about Charles Gounod who, 135 years ago, composed his beautiful Ave Maria on Johann Sebastian Bach’s First Prelude from the Well-Tempered Keyboard (Vol. I)… In our present case, a German composer wrote 48 melodies; 180 years later, an Italian musician adds a piano accompaniment, and his work is published in France: this German-Italian-French collaboration is a truly European effort!" - Gaetano di Bacco
