Milde was born in Prague and it was at the conservatory there that he studied bassoon and composition, later building a career as a bassoonist and teacher at the conservatory where he had trained, for which he has been described as "the torchbearer of the Prague bassoon school." The manuscripts of a number of his short pieces for bassoon and piano, two concertos and a concertino are held in the library of the Prague Conservatory, and many of these have now been published.

But it is for Milde's two collections of bassoon studies, Op.24 and Op.26, that he is best known. Apparently first published in 1891, '50 Concert Studies, Opus 26' remains popular and continues to appear in the higher grades of the ABRSM syllabus. "The name of Ludwig Milde is well known to bassoonists everywhere as the composer of etudes which, together with those of Weissenborn, are learnt by every student of the instrument." (William Waterhouse, 1989).

This edition for bassoon was prepared by Simon Kovar (1890-1970) who emigrated to the USA from Russian controlled Lithuania in 1922. He joined the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as second bassoon and built a reputation as an outstanding teacher of his instrument at a number of prestigious establishments including the Juilliard School of Music. His edition of the Milde studies has a copyright date of 1948.
