"Gifted but indolent" was the way the 17 year old Satie was described when he was expelled from the Paris Conservatoire, and he did no better when readmitted in 1885 so joined the French Army to escape, only to be invalided out as a result of bronchitis. Three years later Satie moved into the bohemian lifestyle of Parisian Montmartre where he found work as a cafe and cabaret pianist which earned him a meagre living for most of his adult life.

From the late 1880s come the three 'Gymnopedies' and the first 'Gnossiennes' - some of Satie's more popular piano works which demonstrate his resistance to the Wagnerian tradition of big musical ideas expressed in 'Leading Motifs' and heavy orchestration. Instead he wrote in a leaner, more direct style but also whimsically. Satie certainly knew Debussy and Ravel and arguably influenced their styles and from about 1910, he became the focus of groups of young composers who were attracted by his unconventionality and originality - 'Les Six' in particular.

Satie wrote almost exclusively for the piano and it is fortunate that the experienced teacher, arranger and author of a series of methods for woodwind and brass instruments Sidney Lawton arranged five of his better known pieces for this edition.

  • Je te Veux - Valse
  • Poudre d'Or - Valse
  • Le Piccadilly - Marche
  • Trois Gymnopedies
