"Philip Sainton is best known for his film score to John Huston's classic 1956 film 'Moby Dick', bit he also produced a number of other orchestral works, along with some smaller scale compositions. Studying at the Royal Academy of Music, one of his tutors was the legendary violist Lionel Tertis, and subsequently Sainton went on to play the viola professionally for a number of years. Benefitting from experience with this instrument, in 1935 he composed his 'Serenade Fantastique', scored originally for viola and orchestra; it was premiered at a Henry Wood Prom later that year with Bernard Shore as soloist.
In 1953 Sainton adapted the 'Serenade Fantastique' for oboe and orchestra, when this version of the piece was then performed with Leon Goossens as soloist.
The middle slow section of the work makes for a most attractive solo for the oboist, and in the present arrangement the major part of this section has been transcribed for oboe and piano. By way of rounding it off, the opening introductory four bars have been utilised again to form a short coda for the arrangement." - John Mitchell, October 2017
