Having obtained History and Music Degrees from Cambridge University by 1929, Arnold Cooke went to the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin for three years where he studied with Hindemith. He returned to Cambridge for a year as Music Director of the Festival Theatre and, in 1933 was appointed Professor of Harmony, Counterpoint and Composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music, now the Royal Northern College of Music. In 1938 Cooke moved to London and began to make a name for himself as a promising young composer, but his career was interrupted by World War II service in the Royal Navy. In 1947 he became Professor of Composition at Trinity College of Music, London, where he remained until his retirement in 1978.He continued to compose until illness intervened in 1993, twelve years before his death._x005F_x000D_

Arnold Cooke composed 160 works over seven decades including 6 symphonies, 10 concertos - 2 of them for clarinet, over 60 chamber works including sonatas for various winds, and a clarinet quintet. 'Alla Marcia' was first published in 1947 by which time the composer had reconciled the stark and sometimes dissonant style he had borrowed from Hindemith and others with a more lyrical English tradition with suggestions of Elgar and John Ireland. It opens in a robust march/fanfare style but develops into a quieter more thoughtful 'Trio' and ends on a low pitched 'piano'.
