Bartok wrote 'An Evening in the Village' in 1908 as No.5 of 'Ten Easy Piano Pieces' and, with its wistful little opening melody which alternates with a cheerful dance tune, in loose rondo form, it has become one of his most popular pieces. The composer liked to play it at recitals and explained to an American interviewer that, although the two contrasting themes of the piece are in the style of Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes, they are in fact of his own invention. Bartok orchestrated the piece in 1931 as No.1 of his 'Hungarian Sketches'.

This arrangement for oboe and piano by the much recorded oboe soloist Péter Pográcz (1936-2010) was first published by Editio Musica Budapest in 1981 as part of a series of Bartok transcriptions, specifically for students, by noted Hungarian composers or performers whose work had been approved by Bartok or his successors. Together with a number of new transcriptions, these titles were reissued in 2015 to mark the seventieth anniversary of the composer's death.
