Ruth Gipps was a prolific composer, accomplished oboist, pianist, conductor and teacher. As a child prodigy on the piano, she won performance competitions against much older contestants and performed her first composition at the age of 8. As an oboist, married to a clarinettist, and mother of a horn player, Gipps composed with a deep understanding of wind instruments. Her Oboe Concerto, written in 1941 when she was only 20, is no exception and draws on pastoral themes, inspired in part by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Injury at the age of 33 forced her to focus mainly on conducting and composing; because she rejected the evolving trends, such as serialism and twelve-tone music, people began to think of her works as old-fashioned. Affected by gender discrimination, she was limited from the performing, recording, and broadcasting of her work during her lifetime. This arrangement of the elegiac second movement, a wistful dialogue between the soloist and ensemble, has been inspired by and is dedicated to the wonderful oboist, Isobel Williams, with many thanks. - John Ivor Holland

John Ivor Holland comes from a musical family and has spent the last decade championing music by women composers from around the world through performances of commissioned works and publication of arrangements for concert band. He won a British Composer Award in 2008 for a project with a community-based chamber orchestra and as a conductor, he’s happiest in front of wind ensembles of any size, drawn from all walks of life; he can also be found mostly performing as a percussionist and part-time brass player.

I had the pleasure of working on this extraordinary piece and being able to present it to the world in this new arrangement is beyond exciting. The team at June Emerson is always so friendly and the performance materials I created on-screen feel even better when held physically in my hands. This wonderful music should be enjoyed by all and the top notch job done to produce excellent scores and parts, destined to be shipped worldwide, is an honour to be a part of.
