BALLADS AND BAGATELLES

Brian Kelly studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He then returned to the RCM where he taught harmony, counterpoint and orchestration for twenty years before moving to Italy to teach part time and then, in the 1990's, to the Dordogne region of France. He has also lived and worked in the U.S.A. and Egypt where he has taught and conducted. Bryan Kelly has well over one hundred compositions to his name, ranging from accompanied wind pieces to works for full orchestra and including a number of choral works.
As the individual titles within 'Ballads and Bagatelles' suggests, it is a collection of nine mostly original compositions which introduce students at Grade 2-4 level to a variety of distinctive and popular musical styles. Key signatures are within the range 2 flats in one direction to 1 sharp in the other and simple rhythms are used for the most part, particularly in No.1 'Polonaise'
