Benny Goodman was given his first clarinet in 1918 at the age of nine and made his professional debut three years later. He left school when he was fourteen to play in bands based in his native Chicago, and formed the first band under his own name in 1934. Their success led to a regular spot on the NBC radio show 'Let's Dance' and a stellar performance in Los Angeles on 21st August 1935 which is acknowledged as marking the start of the 'Swing Era'. In addition to his Big Band, Goodman formed various small groups with leading jazz players including Gene Krupa (drums), Teddy Wilson (piano) and Lionel Hampton (vibraphone), but this did not detract from the success of the 'BG' Big Band which appeared in the 1937 film 'Hollywood Hotel', so starting a long line of film engagements through the 1940s. His frequent USA and worldwide tours during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, with his band and as soloist, kept Benny Goodman " ... in the forefront of the world's music scene - a niche he will always deserve."

This collection of 25 titles is made up of 10 of Benny Goodman's own compositions, 11 for which he shares the credit with colleagues and 4 by others alone. From copyright dates, the titles span the period 1936 to 1960, but most of them are dated to the early 1940s, during World War II and when 'Swing' was at its height.
