Claude Arrieu entered the Conservatoire de Paris in 1924 to study piano with Paul Dukas, amongst others, and it was in his class that she won first prize for composition. From there she began to develop an easy but serious style in a neo-classical idiom, inspired by Fauré, Debussy and Ravel, which expressed her melodic ideas fluently and elegantly. She contributed to a wide range of genres, notably for voice in a number of song cycles, choral works and opera, and her instrumental works include concertos for piano, violin and trumpet besides a concerto and a sonatina for flute. In 1935 she joined the French Radio Broadcasting Program Service which must have exposed her to a wide range of lighter music and encouraged her writing for the theatre, film and music hall as well as radio and experimental electronic music. Pierre Schaeffer, composer, broadcaster, acoustic engineer and colleague of Arrieu's at French Radio wrote of her music " …, she delivered emotion through an impeccable technique and a spiritual vigilance, finding the path to the heart."

This comes out in the thirty-three bars of the 'Chanson de la Pastoure' or 'Song of the Shepherdess'. Its gently lilting 6/8 and minor key give it the pastoral feel that you expect from the title and there is a naivety in it which suggests a folksong.
