In 1774 Pleyel was sent by his patron to study composition with Joseph Haydn who later described him as his "....dearest and most efficient pupil." Following a spell in Italy, Pleyel went to Srasbourg in 1783 where he eventually became first 'chapel master' (choir master) to the cathedral. He was in London in February 1792 to conduct his first professional concert whose programme contained symphonies by Mozart, Pleyel's old teacher Haydn and himself. He was the first to publish the almost complete collection of Haydn's string quartets and started yet another venture in 1807 by opening the piano factory which bore his name and continued in production until 2013. The bulk of Pleyel's compositions seem to date from his time in Strasbourg where he probably wrote many of his 41 symphonies and 70 string quartets. Mozart wrote well of him to his father in April 1784, anticipating that "..., Pleyel should replace Haydn for us." But as Pleyel's business interests grew, the quality of his compo
