Performed by Keith Dwyer, clarinet Accompaniment: Cassini String Quartet: Charles Roth, 1st violin; Marla Smith, 2nd violin; John Madison, viola; John Iatzko, violoncello.
Written for his friend and fellow Freemason in Vienna, Anton Stadler, the quintet was completed in September of 1789, and premiered a few days before Christmas of that year. It is one of Mozart's most perfect accomplishments - a score of proud serenity, transparent texture and radiant beauty. It is also an example of Mozart's uncanny ability to combine the best parts of chamber music and concerto music. The solo clarinet leads the ensemble but does not subjugate it. There is an infinite variety of interplay between the performing partners, and all five instruments undertake the virtuoso's role at one time or another. 'The result,' says Homer Ulrich, 'is a piece of music whose charm and delicacy are difficult to duplicate in the literature of strings and winds.'
This set includes the quintet in its original key with printed parts for both A and B flat clarinets, and adds a re-pitched version for B-flat clarinettists, allowing players of that instrument easier execution plus the ability to learn the same fingerings as the composer's intended A clarinet for performance purposes. It also includes a high-quality printed music score for B flat clarinet and audio recordings, with a complete version with soloist in split-channel stereo, then a second version in full stereo of the accompaniment minus the soloist. Also includes a recording of the quintet re-pitched to allow B flat clarinettists to play the original written part for A clarinet.
The audio is accessed online using the unique code inside each book and can be streamed or downloaded. The audio files include PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right.

This is the first time in about thirty years that I have been unhappy with my purchase, and it is not JE's fault. I had a Peters Edition of the clarinet part with Piano accompaniment which came with a CD of a professional string quartet for a backing disc. Naturally I got it from JE. I lost the CD recently and wanted another. JE advised me that there was no longer a Peters version and offered me a Hal Leonard one. Reluctantly I bought it as it is an online version to download. It was impossibly quiet on my laptop and on my wife's tablet. I put it on a USB and played it through the TV. Then it was loud enough to play with, but no matter what, I could not download the movement in the right order. III kept coming up before II. It doesn't play them one after the other either. You have to find the movement and click it on. This is supposed to be progress, but it has made my two different types of CD player obsolete, and I can't carry the TV about with me to play anywhere I like, and if I play it at home, no-one can watch TV. Once you could just buy what you wanted. Now you have to accept long Terms and Conditions (non-negotiable) and can only buy what the cash swallowers deign to sell. I shan't abandon JE, but Hal Leonard? Don't tempt me!
