Watson Forbes seems to have been active as a viola player during the middle years of the twentieth century, having trained as a violinist at the Royal Academy of Music in London before travelling to Czechoslovakia to further his studies in 1930. Returning to London, his solo and recording career took off during the 1930's and into WW II when he regularly contributed to Dame Myra Hess's National Gallery concerts. He returned to Scotland in 1964 as Radio Scotland's Head of Music and after his retirement ten years later, ".... Forbes worked on an extensive series of arrangements, …."

These must have included the OUP published series 'Classical & Romantic Pieces' for various instruments, and the fact that the contents of each book are different to the others shows that the pieces were carefully chosen for each instrument. The bassoon collection was published in 1977 and consists of eleven pieces under nine titles, selected from about three hundred and fifty years of music. There are lesser known pieces by well-known composers in a variety of styles, tempi and key signatures. Originally written for solo strings or keyboard, these arrangements provide an introduction to repertoire not usually available to the progressing bassoonist.

  • Heller - Sunset Song (Op.45 No.16)
  • Beethoven - Theme (from Piano Sonata Op.14 No.2)
  • Vivaldi - Sicilienne and Allegretto (Cello Sonata No.5)
  • Anon. - My Little Sweet Darling
  • Arne - Minuet (Trio Sonata No.7)
  • Dukas - Extract from The Sorceror's Apprentice
  • Schumann - Romance (Op.28 No.2)
  • Beethoven - Melody (Violin Concerto Op.61)
