As always, with Alyssa Morris's music, challenging rhythms counter each player against the others, and you know from the beginning you're in for a ride.
Three lovely movements: Waves, with a fluid semiquaver momentum and changes of time signature from, for example, 15/8 to 6/8 to 7/8, sitting back down to the initial 12/8, conveying the "graceful but with underlying agitation" Morris describes in the last two bars; Seals has a cheeky lazy swing feel, lovely to play on the oboe, and challenges players with punchy articulation and grace notes accelerating to "big and loud", before the piano solo takes you back to the swing feel of the beginning and a two bar motif on oboe and flute to finish. Spring Tide has little fugal sections between the wind players followed by piano interludes, all at an exciting crotchet = 160, changing time signatures and wide dynamic variations bringing energy to the piece. Very satisfying with a great flourishing ending. If you are intending to coach this piece, good Grade 8 players needed. Highly recommend buying.
