About the Music
Franz Berwald (1796-1868) was a Swedish composer of the Romantic era. His Concert Piece, originally composed for bassoon and orchestra in 1827, is extremely effective in this new transcription for bass clarinet and piano.
The single-movement work offers the bass clarinettist a wide range of technical and expressive challenges typical of the era, such as passages demanding fluidity in scales and arpeggios. The work would make an excellent addition to a recital program, or serve equally well for audition or contest purposes.
