Although she discarded nearly everything she had written from her time at the Royal Academy of Music until the mid 1940s, Phyllis Tate produced an extensive and varied musical output ranging from music for schools to opera. She was known for her fascination with musical textures and the instruments and combinations used to achieve them; a vivid musical imagination, sensitivity to colour in music and meticulous craftsmanship. Tate turned away from the fashion of composing for the musical elite and much of her work has a robustly popular appeal, including the Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Strings which is said to be the first piece that Phyllis Tate claimed as her own.

Written in 1944, the Saxophone Concerto was given its first performance by the BBC, which had commissioned it, on 31st December 1946 with Michael Krein as soloist. He was also soloist for the The first public performance at a Halle concert in Manchester in 1948. Colin Mason in Grove's Dictionary of Music & Musicians writes ".....the problem of writing something of just the the right formal and musical weight for this symphonically still unassimilated instrument is admirably solved."

  • Canzonetta
  • Scherzo
