"Concerto for Low Horn & Chamber Orchestra was composed in 1995. This unusual work was a commission by Mr Edward Deskur of the Orchestra of the Tonhalle Zürich. There are four movements, which was the original request of Mr Deskur. The first movement opens with thunderous and dramatic timpani and solo-horn glissandi. This is followed by the statement of an old Scots hymn which is accompanied by the woodwinds in a minimalistic pattern. The lyrical theme is the introduced. It is highly melodic at first and then becomes very dramatic, covering a wide range of the horn, particularly in the low range. The second movement requires a harpsichord, which plays as an accompaniment, and through an interesting choice of harmony, render an “other-worldly” flavour to the very melancholy song played by the soloist. It was the desire of the commissioner to include a woodwind quintet as the third movement. This movement is very playful and capricious in style. The fourth movement is certainly the most virtuoso of the work. It is Sonata-Allegro in form and employs some minimalistic-type writing in the winds as an accompaniment. It was the aim of the composer to show off the true art of the low horn player, that is, the French horn player who is specialised in performing in the extreme low range. This work has already become quite popular in its version with piano accompaniment, despite the fact that it has yet to be performed with orchestra." - Kerry Turner
