It is likely that the teenage Pleyel was in Vienna learning the violin from Vanhal when he was noticed by Count Ladislaus Erd''dy who became his patron and arranged for Pleyel to study composition with Haydn at Eisenstadt in 1774. Haydn was later to describe him as "his dearest and most efficient pupil". Returning from Italy in 1783, Pleyel became at first deputy, and six years later, 'chapel master' to Strasbourg Cathedral, but this did not prevent him accepting an invitation to London to take control of the 1792 professional concert season. There he met his old teacher Haydn who wrote "We shall each take our share of success, and go home satisfied" home to Pleyel being revolution ravished France where, clearing himself of the charge of being 'an enemy of the Republic' he settled in Paris as a music-seller and, in 1807, diversified from that by founding the well known pianoforte factory which still bears his name.
