It is thought that Russian born Jascha Gurewich emigrated to the USA in the 1910s where he must have quickly taken up the saxophone to join the 'March King' John Philip Sousa's band as sax soloist for the i920-21 season. Sousa is reported as saying that he had not heard any playing to match the quality of Gurewich's in 30 years. He forged a career as soloist during the 1920s, performing varied programmes which often included his own 'brilliant light solos', mainly in New York, but also on recital tours of the US promoting Buescher saxophones. Gurewich's classically inclined style seems to have been overtaken by developments in Jazz in the 1930s and he gave fewer radio and live concerts, devoting more time to teaching.

Most of those 'brilliant light solos' seem to have been out of print in their own right for a long time, a few of them appearing only in collections of alto sax pieces, but the saxophone concerto op.102 is readily available. It was written in 1923 and first performed by the composer in December that year at Carnegie Hall in New York with his wife Ida as piano accompanist. There is no record of any orchestral parts and when the concerto was published in 1926 it was scored for alto saxophone and piano only. It consists of the usual three movements, all of which are dominated by extended semiquaver passages in various patterns which demonstrate the technical potential of the instrument and the virtuosity of the performer and composer.
  • Maestoso
  • Andante sostenuto
  • Presto
