CORONACH

'Coronach' is an old Gaelic word for a dirge or lament. The initial pedal tones represent an ancient war trumpet, the Carynx, which had a bell like a dog's head, inset with wolf's teeth and garnets for eyes. The theme of Coronach appears in the second movement of the composer's First Symphony.
The player is required to prepare their own multi-track tape based on the lower staves which is played during the performance. The top stave is played 'live' throughout. There is much scope for freedom of interpretation here, and the player may make as many tracks of the opening and closing sections as he wishes: this allows an initial dirge-like quality and the possibility of a 'Sear of Horns' at the end.
